Abstract
DC Middle School Attendance Boundaries. This dataset shows D.C. public middle school attendance boundaries, digitized from D.C. Public School paper maps and later added to the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) for the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO).
The maps were heads-up digitized from 1995 orthophotos. They do not include private or charter schools. Maps were created in fall of 2000 and reviewed by D.C. Public Schools, with a further update in 2004. An attendance boundary is the defined geographical area in which a citizen must live to enroll in a particular DC public school.
All DC GIS data is stored and exported in Maryland State Plane coordinates NAD 83 meters.

fax: (202) 727-5660 hours: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm | The school boundaries were heads-up digitized from paper maps supplied by the D.C. public schools and the 1995 orthos. They do not include private or charter schools. Maps were created in the fall of 2000 and reviewed by D.C. Public Schools. The planning and facilities group of the DC Public Schools updated the existing attendance boundaries using the basemap and enrollee locations as a base in 2004.
Although these boundaries follow existing snapbase features, the digitized boundaries are not identical to those base features. Differences are not significant at scales fitting a letter-sized page, but differences may become apparent when zoomed in further. Given this, these boundaries are not coincident with geography from other DC GIS datasets. Staff used a 1m tolerance to clean up gaps and overshoots in the polygons.

| Dataset archived, replaced by newer version from DC Public Schools.
The files I sent are approved by the Board of Education as of April 21, 2004, and in the case of middle and elementary, they were modified in 2006 after some consolidations. There should be a reference somewhere that boundaries may be modified in the future and that proposed boundaries are posted on:

| All of the attendance boundary outlines (ES, MS, and SHS) were fit to the DC line. Staff then snapped the boundary to the DC snapbase where it clearly followed a road. If a boundary did not follow a road, the line was adjusted to travel the straighest path without intersecting any property.
Boundaries that traveled along water were adjusted to follow the snapbase shoreline, but generalized enough to minimize vertices. If a property was in a school boundary, the boundary line was snapped to the OwnerPly boundary.
For areas where the attendance zone boundaries could not be fit to the snapbase, DCPS and OCTO resolved the issues on an individual basis. |
